Hakodate Meijikan

Travel Guide

The Hakodate Meijikan was formerly the Hakodate Post Office which was built in 1911 but has now changed into a much-loved shopping mall with a cafe, glassworks shop, music box shop and more.

As an old Hakodate Post Office, it was divided into two departments, telegrams and post, and a great number of local people worked there for over 50 years, until August 1962. The post office has now been moved to the Chuo Post Office building.

Hakodate Meijikan is a place for glass and musical box fans where they can create their own unique glassware and try sand blasting. Moreover, Hakodate Meijikan is where musical box lovers get to create their own personalized musical box with a selection of 30 different melodies and then moving on to decorate the exterior of the box. This is an interesting place to visit especially for the art-lovers.

Hakodate Wine Western Branch is one of the unique shops in the Hakodate Meijikan. Visitors can fine the popular wine and try more than 5 glasses of wine for free tasting.

Visitors can enjoy the concert played with music boxes which was produced about 150 years ago in the Music Box Meijikan. One of two oldest organ in Japan is displayed here.
