Previously used as warehouses, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse now constitute a commercial facility of red brick buildings holding restaurants, shops, art museums, meeting halls, etc. Some of the warehouses continue to be used as sales warehouses, giving a glimpse into Hakodate’s golden age of shipping. Facing Hakodate Bay across a navigation channel, it is a row of red brick warehouses that conjures up a feeling of nostalgia.

The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse were originally built in 1909 and remodeled in 1988 as part of a waterfront area redevelopment with a theme of “the old and the new”. The area was where shipyards and foreign settlements were once located, but since about 1879 it prospered as a warehouse area. The Kanemori logo on these buildings once symbolized the trade-port of Hakodate.

The complex consists of four zones, each of which has its own distinctive characteristics;

Kanemori Youbutuskan was build 130 years ago. There are a numerous of unique shops, giving the feeling of daily fun flea market.

Hakodate History Plaza is home to a beer hall where you can enjoy fresh local beer shipped directly from the brewery.

Kanemori Hall is a multi-purpose event hall which can accommodate about 200 spectators. Here you can organize concerts, lectures, film shows, exhibitions and weddings. Sometimes, well-known musicians hold concert here.

Located across the navigation channel, Bay Hakodate features an atmospheric townscape that is a popular date spot for couples. Lit up at night at certain times of year, you can see the red bricks reflected in the water.

Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse receives 2 million visitors each year. As well as people from across Japan, it has recently begun to attract foreign tourists too; moreover, it is highly popular with local people. With a diverse range of events throughout the year, you'll never be bored.

Hakodate Port opened in 1859 as one of the first international trading ports of Japan, along with Yokohama and Nagasaki. Flourishing as a Port, the city has seen countless people and cultures come and go. Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, the first commercial warehouse in Hakodate, has witnessed the history of the city through its warehousing business. As one of the symbols of the Hakodate bay area that still reminds us much of the early days of the shipping industry, Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse will continue to witness the history of Hakodate forever and offer every visitor a beautiful, unforgettable time.

15 minute walk from JR Hakodate Station.
1 minute walk from JR Hakodate Station, take the Hakodate City Train at Hakodateekimae bus stop and get off at the Jujigai Station, then walk 4 minutes.

Take Hokkaido Highway route 63 from Hakodate Airport and take National Highway route 278. It is approximately 30 minutes from airport.
